There are many different types of pomace olive oil. Even we sometimes lose track. But what is good pomace olive oil? We’ll help you answer this question by looking at a few factors.

A quick reminder, what is pomace olive oil?

Did you know that there are 4 types of olive oil suitable for consumption? The types are olive oil, mixed refined olive oil, pomace olive oil, and inedible olive oil. Pomace olive oil is one of them. Here you’ll find an extensive article about the types of olive oil.

Pomace olive oil is made from olive pulp. After pressing our (organic) extra virgin olive oil, fresh pulp remains. Through various production processes, you can make pomace olive oil from this pulp. This way, nothing from the original olive is wasted. Beautiful, isn’t it? You’ll find more info about what pomace olive oil is here.

Would you like to know more about the production process? Here it is: by heating the pulp, you get raw pomace olive oil. This is then filtered and steamed. So, it’s 100% natural! To give the pomace olive oil flavor and nutrients, extra virgin olive oil is added. You can find more information here about how pomace olive oil is made.

What is good pomace olive oil?

So, now you know what pomace olive oil is and how it’s made. But what is good pomace olive oil? That depends on the choices you make in the production process of pomace olive oil. We will explain this by telling you how we make pomace olive oil in the best way and what more efficient (and thus cheaper) but lower-quality alternatives are.

First, the olives you press. There are many factors that affect the quality of the olives. You can read more here about the best olive oil and what those factors are. For example, consider whether they are grown organically like ours, where the trees are located, what the biodiversity is, and when they are harvested.

Next, you look at the pressing of the olives. When you press the olives on the same day they are harvested using an authentic method, the olive oil that comes out is of the best quality. The longer you wait, the lower the quality of the oil.

Then you consider the production process of the pomace olive oil. This is, in our opinion, the most important factor. We obtain pomace olive oil by heating the pulp to 60 degrees Celsius and refining it naturally. However, much pomace olive oil is refined by adding hexane, a chemical substance that is not suitable for consumption. In our view, you absolutely do not want to find this in your pomace olive oil.

Finally, you look at the (extra virgin) olive oil that you add to the pomace olive oil to give it more flavour and nutrients. We add organic extra virgin olive oil, which is the best type of olive oil. Other brands add (extra virgin) olive oil, which is of lower quality. This means less flavour and fewer nutrients. By the way, do you want to know more about whether pomace olive oil is healthy?

Okay, conclusion?

What is good pomace olive oil? As you can see from the information above, there are quite a few factors that influence this. So how can you figure that out? In our opinion, there’s only one way: by getting to know the products and trusting the producers. In short, go for a local farmer or a brand like Gkazas Olive Oil that is open and transparent about the entire production process.
