Olive Oil vs Coconut Oil: Which Is Healthier?

Olive Oil vs Coconut Oil: Which Is Healthier?

Match, match, match! No, we are not in the stadium. And this isn’t a competition. But it is interesting to compare two of the most popular oils of the moment. What are the health benefits of olive oil and coconut oil? That is why we present here some facts about the fat percentage, antioxidants, the quality and the difference between coconut oil and olive oil.

Olive oil vs. coconut oil: fats

Olive oil  contains saturated fats and percentages of omega-3 and omega-6. But the big stars of its fatty acid profile are its monounsaturated fats, mostly in the form of oleic acid. Monounsaturated fats are linked to a reduced risk of high blood pressure and a decrease in cholesterol, both of which are associated with heart disease. Research shows, as we wrote before, that olive oil benefits heart health in multiple ways and reduces the risk of cardiovascular risk. verschil kokosolie olijfolie Coconut oil, on the other hand, is mainly composed of saturated fats in the form of molecules called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). Saturated fat is also associated with a small increased risk of cardiovascular disease, but recent studies have shown that these claims should be used with caution. An advantage of MCTs is that they are quickly converted into energy in the metabolism, resulting in less stored fat. Therefore, it can help with weight loss, among other things.

Olive oil vs. coconut oil: antioxidants

Olive oil has a reputation for being rich in antioxidants for good reason. We refer again to the aforementioned link in which this is further explained. Extra virgin olive oil contains bioavailable phenolic compounds that have been shown to have multiple, varied health benefits. Coconut oil has been associated with some antioxidant activity, but not to the same extent. However, it contains some antibacterial agents that play a role in preventing acne, boosting immune function and fighting infection.kokosolie gezonder dan olijfolie

Olive oil vs. coconut oil: quality

You know that of the different types of olive oil, the organic, extra virgin variety is the healthiest. But also slightly more expensive than other oils. Always check carefully whether the correct quality marks are on the bottle to be sure of what you buy. Then you know that the quality is also good. It doesn’t have to be what you would at first prefer, but it is plant-based and sustainably produced. Also with coconut oil it is important to check whether the oil comes from a virgin, cold-pressed coconut. We also advise against taking the ‘deodorized’ variant. Then you can assume that it is made more of junk than of quality. Check the label or ask for it in a specialized store.

Conclusion, is olive oil healthy(er)?

We have no hard evidence that olive oil is healthier than the other. Studies differ too much on this. Both extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil have health-promoting effects. Nevertheless, the Nutritional Value Table is clear in its assessment: where extra virgin olive oil scores an 8.3 on health value, coconut oil scores a 5.6. We’re just giving it to you for your information! 😉 If you feel like something sweet, go for the coconut oil. More in the mood for something savoury?
